Our most recent lessons in Spanish have all to do with the description of clothes and foods and what to do with them. While this project didn´t have us cook anything it did have us create something of our own. The History of quitapena dolls is rooted deep within Guatemalan culture going back all the way to Mayan legend. They are said to take away negative emotions when feeling too much and when put under one´s pillow, by the next day all worries have been resolved. For this project, we were to make a version of a quitapena doll that would take away a negative emotion of its own.
The design I came up with was one of a small guy wearing a nice shirt and bowtie with a belt, I wanted him to look very kind-hearted and attentive this is the sketch I drew up below.

Next was the making of the doll which was a bit more complicated. We had to find ways to accurately depict our dolls while staying true to the feeling as well. I picked a more beige yellow for the pants while still keeping the shirt blue. Gave him a purple bowtie, a red belt, and some eyes and he ended up turning out way more dressed up than I had hoped him to be but I thought it turned out amazing! Quitapena dolls are either usually the size of a finger or fingernail and mine is about half the size of my hand.

Now was to write some Spanish out about what he was wearing, the descriptive phrases are put below:
Mi muñeca tiene una camisa azul con lunares blancos. Lleva pantalones amarillos con un patrón de diamantes. También tiene una pajarita morada y cabello rubio. La tela de la camisa es más delgada y de algodón, mientras que los pantalones están hechos de un material de mezclilla.
A sentence to simulate day in the life or what the doll might like to do:
el estuvo sentado en mi escritorio cuando entré a mi habitación estresado por la tarea. Durante su día le gusta sentarse y leer cómics.
and lastly a sentence to say what emotion he is supposed to take away witch is self-doubt:
Es muy bueno para quitarme los sentimientos de duda.
This project was one I really enjoyed especially because I got to create something I always look out for a chance to put a creative and handmade spin on school projects but there was no need to look with this one. Figuring some of the grammar out I would say was the hardest part but the descriptions of the clothes came pretty naturally. It was a great opportunity this unit to learn about how to give compliments and describe dress I hope I get to use it some time in the future.
