Through the Eyes of a Candidate
The class of rhetoric was a very deep look into how to interest any audience about almost any topic. We defined basic parts of how a speech should appeal, to seeing how they strategized the speech and made those listening intrigued, convinced, or even emotionally affected by what the speaker is saying. This action project made us test our knowledge of how to speak to a crowd but also how to present ourselves physically when talking to a crowd. Based off of a student from GCE who is running for student council we were to make a speech for them answering an important social or political question in only a few minutes. Then to make a logo for the candidate that made sense, something that gives a message. Below is the written out script, video, and logo for the candidate I chose. The video ran just past three minutes because the interviewer had to interview the question to the candidate.

Hello Mr. Leon and thank you for coming to talk with us for a quick moment on what your plans are going to look like if you are elected into the student council as president. We were wondering, we know that your two main concerns for the school as of now are highly focused on safety and the advertising of the school. Our question is “What exactly are your plans to promote the school so that more people would want to attend?”
Yes, the topics of safety and spreading the word of the school are very pressing top matters on my agenda. My first experience with a security problem was at my former school actually. We were sitting at our desks at the end of the day, meeting like we do every day. The kid was sitting there near the door and had decided he didn’t want to be there for the last couple of minutes of class. So you know what he did? He grabbed his bag and bolted right out of that door like a fish breaking free from a net. He made a full break for it. There was only one guard on duty that day, and they were tasked with running down the student and sending him back to class. The guard wasn’t able to catch up and that student got detention. Thinking about that just makes me feel even more motivated to keep the amazing community we have here at GCE safe no matter the circumstance. Security guards have been proven to decrease crime in schools and have the ability to repond to a crisis way quicker than any first responder.
For my steps moving forward in creating awareness for and promoting the school, I think we could hold more events, such as mixers with other schools to create awareness. We could also get more involved with school fairs, to inform parents and students at elementary schools across the city to tell them more about us. Additionally, we could do more information booths at street fairs, beyond the Sunday events in the Loop. You know this community is a sappling, and like a sappling it must be given the right space and resources to thrive and grow to its full potential, I believe I can be one of those resources.
